"The Monarch butterfly emerging from a cocoon-shaped tumour from within a lung is a symbol a change of perspective and re-birth. The change in perspective a patient get’s when being diagnosed with lung cancer (or any terminal illness) has been explained to me as a form of enlightened perspective. Priorities and life’s meaning can change, such as what happens when a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly and no longer sees the world at a slow ground pace. The second meaning is re-birth. When patients come to terms with the illness it’s as if they are beginning a new life where things of the past remain and the future is theirs to make from the new precious present."
